Pirates’ Jared Jones Seeking Second Opinion on Elbow Injury

Pirates’ Jared Jones Seeking Second Opinion on Elbow Injury

The Pittsburgh Pirates just took a tough hit to their rotation. Starting pitcher Jared Jones is seeking a second opinion on his elbow injury, which forced him to miss his next spring training start. The 23-year-old, who was expected to be a key part of the rotation this season, will begin the year on the injured list, and there is no timetable for when he’ll start throwing again.

Jones, who made his MLB debut last season, started experiencing elbow discomfort this week. After initial tests, he and the Pirates decided he should get a second opinion before determining the next steps. While the team hasn’t shared details on the severity of the injury, the fact that he’s seeking another opinion definitely raises concerns about a possible extended absence.

For now, Jones has been completely shut down from throwing, and the Pirates are taking a cautious approach with his recovery. Given his age and importance to the team’s future, they won’t rush him back until he’s fully healthy.

This is a frustrating setback for both Jones and the Pirates. After showing promise in his rookie season—demonstrating his ability to miss bats—he was expected to take on a bigger role in 2025. Now, Pittsburgh must wait for more clarity on the situation, hoping to get their young star back this season and avoid the dreaded Tommy John surgery.
