Pablo López left Tuesday night’s game against the Royals with what the Twins are calling right hamstring tightness. It happened in the fifth inning after a walk, when he was seen grabbing the back of his leg.
Manager Rocco Baldelli later said it’s a mild strain and an MRI earlier today confirmed that.
This is unfortunate for fantasy managers as López has been a steady, reliable arm. Anytime a pitcher grabs his leg mid-game, it’s never a good sign.
If the MRI shows anything more than a mild strain, he could miss a start or two—or more—which hurts both real-life and fantasy rotations.
For now, fantasy managers might want to stash him on the IL if that becomes reality, and look for Twins top pitching prospect Zebby Mathews to potentially fill his spot in the rotation for the time being.
The Twins say they’re not changing any plans yet, but fantasy owners should be ready to act fast and add Mathews ahead of whatever news the Twins give out on Lopez before its to late and someone else scoops him up.
