Jazz Chisholm Jr. is inching closer to a return for the Yankees after missing nearly a month with a right oblique strain. The injury, which involved three high-grade tears, was expected to sideline him for 4 to 6 weeks. Now, with that timeline nearing its end, Chisholm has resumed baseball activities, including facing high-velocity pitching machines. He was scheduled for a full workout on May 27, and a minor league rehab assignment could begin later this week.
Though Chisholm has voiced his dislike for rehab assignments, the Yankees are likely to have him play at least a couple of games before making his return to the big-league roster. Before the injury, Chisholm struggled at the plate, hitting just .181 with seven home runs and 17 RBIs in 30 games. Despite the low average, his power and defensive presence at second base have been missed.
With DJ LeMahieu filling in during Chisholm’s absence, his return could bring a spark to both the infield and the lineup. His energy, speed, and ability to change a game with one swing or one stolen base make him a key piece. If he returns as expected next week, it could be a timely boost for the Yankees moving forward.
