Verdugo, 28, spent last season with the New York Yankees, where he struggled at the plate. Verdugo hit just .233 with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs in 149 games. Despite the rough year, he’s been solid at the plate in the past, posting a .272 career batting average over stints with the Dodgers, Red Sox, and Yankees. The Braves are hoping he can get back to form and provide depth to their outfield.
Sending Verdugo to Triple-A makes sense for Atlanta. Since he missed most of spring training, he needs time to get his timing back before contributing at the major league level. If he is able to get his timing back, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him called up quickly.
For now, Verdugo will work his way back in Gwinnett, but his experience and versatility could be valuable for the Braves as the season goes on.
