The Miami Marlins will be without Ryan Weathers for at least a few weeks after the left-hander was diagnosed with a forearm strain. Weathers reported discomfort following his last spring training outing, and after medical evaluations, the team decided to shut him down.
The good news for Miami is that tests showed no damage to his ulnar collateral ligament, meaning he won’t need Tommy John surgery. Weathers is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks, with the plan for him to avoid throwing for at least one to two weeks before starting a rehab program.
This is a tough blow for the Marlins and fantasy managers who may have expected a big year from Weathers as this could be something that lingers all year. Last year, he posted a 5-6 record with a 3.63 ERA over 16 starts, showing flashes of being a key piece in the Marlins rotation and potentially an extremely good fantasy pitcher.
For now, Weathers’ focus will be on rest and recovery, with the Marlins and fantasy managers hoping to get him back on the mound as soon as possible.
